Heliskiing Frequently Asked Questions
How do I rate my ability?
You don’t have to be an expert! If you are a strong intermediate skier/boarder and manage “blue and some black” groomed runs with confidence and in good physical shape, but don’t have powder experience, let our custom powder skis do the work while you enjoy the experience of fantastic alpine powder.
I. Intermediate: You are reasonably fit and ski blue runs with confidence. You have little or no off piste (ungroomed) powder or tree skiing experience, and you are a long radius parallel skier.
A. Advanced: You are physically fit and have off piste powder and tree skiing experience. You can ski most types of downhill runs at your own pace, and are a short radius parallel skier.
E. Expert: You are in top physical shape and have experience skiing off piste in powder. You are confident skiing all types of downhill runs including trees, moguls and steep pitches.
What is a typical day like?
- Starts with a 8:00 am check-in and custom powder ski selection
- Fuel your body with a buffet breakfast while one of our guides reviews guest pack equipment features during an in-house briefing.
- All guests are equipped with our Pulse BarryVox transceivers and attend a helicopter safety briefing and companion rescue training prior to departure.
- Group photos are taken and available for viewing in the Alpine Boutique upon your return
- Lift Off!! Where you ski/board is decided by your guide and pilot, depending on the best snow conditions and weather.
- Each group is guided by one or two of our ACMG/IFMGA certified mountain guides.
- A backcountry picnic lunch is served half way into your package runs, consisting of hearty sandwiches, hot spiced tea, fruit and treats.
- Extra runs are available, once you have completed your package runs (minimums apply)
- Enjoy Après back at the heliplex in the comfort of Choppers Landing Restaurant & Lounge, with your new friends sharing stories, photos and emails.
Where and when do I check-in?
We ask that our guests visit the heliplex the night prior to skiing. This makes for a more relaxing morning and smooth check-in on your heliski/board day. Our Banff guests will complete paperwork in the morning at the heliplex.
What are the weather and terrain like?
Heliskiing/boarding is totally weather dependant. The weather determines where we ski, or whether we ski at all. It also affects the snow conditions. Conditions are not always perfect – it is mountain skiing in a totally uncontrolled environment. Our aim is to give you the best skiing available every day, but since we cannot control the weather, sometimes the best skiing may be very tough and/or in the trees.
High and exposed conditions range from dry powder excellence to wind-crust challenges. Snowy overcast days mean the best conditions are usually below the tree line, where skiers cut lines through gladed runs. Whatever the weather or conditions, our aim is to maximize the best skiing available, giving you an exciting day on the slopes.
What do I wear?
Dress in layers as you would at the ski resort
Goggles or sunglasses are a must
Helmets are recommended
Sunscreen and lip protection
No backpacks, please. Because we are weight restricted in the helicopter, we ask our guests to only bring what you can fit in your pockets.
No cell phones or music device, they have been found to interfere with transceiver transmission
Don’t forget your CAMERA!
Who is looking out for my safety?
The safety of guests is our top priority. Our guides have the finest training in North America and are certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, or the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association. They also have their Emergency Medical Training and Canadian Avalanche Level II Certification.
On a daily basis, RK Heliski exchanges information with the Canadian Avalanche Association and as an info ex partner contributes data to the bulletin.
Do I need to complete a waiver?
Prior to take off, all skiers are required to read and sign a waiver of liability which releases RK Heliski Panorama Inc. from liability and acceptance of risks.
