Summer in the Columbia Valley is always epic. Whether you’re up in the mountains immersed in the wildlife and stunning alpine flowers, or down in the valley scoping out the local shops and farmers markets, there is no shortage of activities to strike off the list.
However, with consistently hot temperatures throughout July, the beaches and lakes have been hopping this summer with those trying to escape the heat. With the long weekend on the horizon and more 30+ degree weather in the forecast, we’ve got an option to help you stay cool and out of the beach lounger.
Be adventurous and take a break from the lake!
Kootenay River Runners are a white water rafting company who know the East Kootenay waterways like the back of their hand. Running daily trips on 3 of the most beautiful, glacial-fed rivers in the valley, a rafting trip is the best way to get off the beaten path and witness untouched Canadian wilderness first hand while getting active outside.
Here are four reasons why these rafting trips should be top of your list this summer:
The guides: The team of guides at Kootenay River Runners are the cream of the crop. They are fun, down to earth, professional, and very passionate about that they do. Rob was my guide on the Toby Creek as well as the Kootenay River and despite the fact that our group had a wide range of ages and previous rafting experience, he did a great job of incorporating something for everyone.
All guides are certified in swift water rescue and wilderness first aid.
The experiences: Kootenay River Runners have a wide range of tours appropriate for just about everyone under the sun. Enjoy a short ‘n sweet classic whitewater experience on the Toby Creek River (paddling right though Panorama), head out on a roaring half-day splash on the Kicking Horse River (in Golden), or find a happy middle ground on the Kootenay River. Plus, longer tours incorporate snack and lunch break to fuel up. When I did a half day paddle on Kootenay River, we pulled over to a forested area with picnic tables where the guides provided hot drinks and a tasty spread of meats, cheeses, and cinnamon buns for those who needed an extra boost of energy.
The scenery: Winding your way through turquoise canyons, snow-capped mountains, and lush forests, this is truly the best way to see the exquisite scenery of the Purcell and Rocky Mountains.
The Kicking Horse River winds its way through the towering mountains in Yoho National Park.
You’ll get a first-class view of Pedley Falls on the Kootenay River full day tour.
The convenience: On the day of your tour all you need is your bathing suit, sunscreen, and a towel. Kootenay River Runners will suit you up with whatever equipment (wet suits, spray jackets, helmets, river shoes), as well as having a pro photographer onsite so you can get great photos of your adventures without the risk of bringing your camera or phone on the raft. In fact, you'll do yourself a favour leaving any valuables you don't need at home or in the car.
The Toby Creek trip is perfect for the young & young at heart. Trips depart directly from the Panorama Adventure Centre
So go ahead and escape the heat this weekend with a true Canadian adventure that you're sure to remember for years to come!
