Panorama Bike Park Open June 26 - Sept 5!
Posted 12 months ago by Clarissa Amaro and Jason Simpson & Trail Crew
There are just 1 more sleep until we’re back in the Bike Park and it’s looking like a hot one for opening day on Saturday! Here’s the lowdown on what you can expect this weekend and this gravity season;
The Panorama Bike Park will be open 10am - 4pm every day from Saturday, June 26 - Sunday, September 5.
Physical distancing is still a thing and super important, so give those around you some space in the lift line and hold off on those opening weekend hugs.
Masks are mandatory to enter all indoor public spaces, so even though you won’t need one outdoors or on the chairlift, you’ll want to have a mask in your pocket for anytime you head indoors, like to get beer and ice-cream. Expect this to be in place throughout the summer.
Lift tickets are available online, and while you can just grab one at Guest Services, it’ll speed things up if you pre-purchase online instead. You can also save up to 20% when you buy in advance. If you already have an activated Panorama lift ticket you can reload days online and head straight to the chairlift. Learn more.
Check out our trail report for what will open. We’ve had plenty of rain, but the recent heat means you should expect trails to be pretty dry. Crazy Train will remain closed as we are still working on a big renovation in there. Quadzilla and lower Insanity will also be closed for now. The high-alpine Hopeful Trails haven’t been assessed yet but predictably there will be some snow and deadfall throughout the trail system. Crews will be up there next week to clean things up and open the trails.
New berms on Bazooka Joe
Trail Crew have been hard at work since early May, bringing the park out of hibernation and primping your favourite trails. A ton of sweat and TLC has gone into refreshes across the Bike Park to improve the experience. This also means that the park will be riding differently than last year. Take things easy on your first few laps to familiarize yourself with the trails again and any updates. Be sure to pre-ride and take note of all signage.
Here’s what you can look forward to on opening day;
The upper section of our beginner flow trail got a total revamp again this spring. After watching a summer of riders hit the section we added last year, we realized it wasn’t quite what we wanted so we brought in the big excavator and moved tons of dirt into huge banked berms and shapes that have vastly improved the fun factor for all level of riders.
We’ve been renovating the Bike Park for the past 5 years, and Bazooka ran so well that it kind of fell to the end our list. This spring we took a very worn and clapped out lower section (you know the spot) and added head high berms to create awesome flow. This also improves the integration and safety of riders at the Mercy Me, Bazooka and Hell’s Bells intersection.
A massive effort has gone into rebuilding the takeoffs and landings throughout the Bike Park. Hell’s Bells got a lot of TLC and is looking fresh. Same goes for Mercy Me and the berms on Rocking Horse. Take offs will be predictable and you can trust the landing to be smooth and flow steadily into the next feature. Same goes for berms – have your slap game ready.
We’ve updated our trail classifications in the Bike Park this season to align with all the improvements we’ve been making, and to give riders a better idea of progression of the trails. Look out for the new signage and if you have any questions reach out to our Bike Patrol team. The grading system at Panorama is relative to the Panorama Bike Park and the terrain here. It’s always a good idea to start slow and tackle a couple of laps on the easiest trail first, before moving to the more advanced runs.
Refresh to Hell's Bells jump line
There are plenty of new developments in the works and we'll share more as the summer progresses but here's the highlights so far.
Crazy Train will open in early July as it’s undergoing a big renovation right now. You’ll see the Mini-X working away in there and expect some exciting new lines and features coming soon.
Renovations underway on Crazy Train
With support from a grant from Columbia Basin Trust, Panorama has initiated a new 8-10km XC trail in the Monument Trail Network. This new beginner and multi-use trail will loop out to both the Placer Hut and Hale Hut. Bikers, hikers and trail runners will enjoy stunning views of Toby Creek and the trail will be perfect for fat biking and snowshoeing come winter as well. Just under half the trail has been completed so far, with the rest anticipated to be ready sometime in August.
We are beyond stoked to see events back on our calendar this season! The Dunbar Summer Series will be here July 21 and adaptive MTB racing joins the event for the very first time! The TransRockies Gravel Royal kicks off a massive 4-days on August 23, and stay tuned for word on the National Canadian Enduro Series also headed our way.
That’s it for now, so tune up your ride and get ready for an awesome summer!
